Australia can offer you some of the most famous and enjoyable train trips in the world. Some of these are also take a few days so lay back, enjoy the scenery and the service while you travel through some of the most incredible landscapes on the planet.
Sydney to Perth
One these great train trips is on the ‘Indian Pacific’ which stretches from Perth on the Indian Ocean in the west, to Sydney on the Pacific in the east – a trip of 4,352kms. The trip takes three nights and stops at (from East to West) Broken Hill, Adelaide and Kalgoorlie famous for the gold discovered there in the 19th Century. The tracks cross the Nullabor* Plain (Desert) and stop at the small outback post of Cook (Pop. 2).
If you are a student you can grab this trip for around $500 and if you’re an avid trainspotter you know that this is one of the most spectacular train journeys in the world.
Adelaide to Darwin
The Ghan (named after the Australian Afghan Camel drivers and labourers who built the line in the early years of the Gold Rush days) will take you on a trip straight up through the Red Centre of Australia. The train travels through some of the harshest landscapes in Australia and stops at Alice Springs. A stop at ‘The Alice’ is a good move as this makes it easy to get in a tour to Uluru (Ayers Rock) or grab a quad-bike for a tour of the oldest working cattle station in the Northern Territory ($109).
